19 to Infinity
Every Gamma. Every Year.
Sigma Lambda Gamma began with 19 women who believed in empowerment through lifelong learning. In honor of their vision, the Sigma Lambda Gamma Education Foundation recognizes October 22 as a day to celebrate our beginnings and the legacy that continues to grow.
On October 22, 1989, a group of collegiate women at the University of Iowa, among them future Foundation Chairwomen Maria Temiquel and Lupita Temiquel-McMillian, came together to create an organization that would empower women from diverse cultural backgrounds. This pivotal meeting laid the foundation for what would become Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Incorporated, officially recognized on April 9, 1990.
Today, that same spirit lives on through every Gamma who continues to learn, lead, and serve. The annual Living Our Legacy campaign honors that legacy by funding professional development opportunities and training that help post collegiate women advance in their careers and create lasting community impact.
